RFC 822, P. Mockapetris, November 1983: This RFC introduces domain style names, their use for ARPA Internet mail and host address support, and the protocols and servers used to implement domain name facilities.

A domain name is an identification label to define a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS).

Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. A prominent example are the top-level Internet domains (TLDs) com, net and org. Below these top-level domains in the DNS hierarchy are the second-level and third-level domain names that are open for reservation and registration by end-users that wish to connect local area networks to the Internet, run web sites, or create other publicly accessible Internet resources. The registration of these domain names is usually administered by domain name registrars who sell their services to the public.

Individual Internet host computers use domain names as host identifiers, or hostnames. Hostnames are the leaf labels in the domain name system usually without further subordinate domain name space. Hostnames appear as a component in Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for Internet resources such as web sites (e.g., en.wikipedia.org).

Domain names are also used as simple identification labels to indicate ownership or control of a resource. Such examples are the realm identifiers used in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the DomainKeys used to verify DNS domains in e-mail systems, and in many other Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs).

An important purpose of domain names is to provide easily recognizable and memorizable names to numerically addressed Internet resources. This abstraction allows any resource (e.g., website) to be moved to a different physical location in the address topology of the network, globally or locally in an intranet. Such a move usually requires changing the IP address of a resource and the corresponding translation of this IP address to and from its domain name.

This article primarily discusses the registered domain names, the domain names registered by domain name registrars to the public. The Domain Name System article discusses the technical facilities and infrastructure of the domain name space and the hostname article deals with specific information about the use of domain names as identifiers of network hosts.

What makes a domain name a successful business?
Q. There are plenty of damin names out there with potential. Potential means nothing without a business plan. If you have a domain name that you feel is worth money, you are wrong. A domain name by itself is worthless unless there is someone out there who is willing to invest in it.

A. Making money from domain names is not limited anymore to the buying and selling of domain names. True, the true value of a domain name is hard to predict. Its value is dictated by the amount of money a person/organization is willing to pay for it. It's a hit and miss business - you may find some names you think are worth high only to find no takers. But the business of domain name has evolved. Before, your only option is to buy a domain name, and wait for someone interested to buy it. Now you can earn money from your domain names without selling them. All you have to do it to put advertising on it. Google has a domain park program where you can put Adsense ads on your domain. And wait for type in traffic (those who type in the URL and… [cont.]

How to change a registered domain name to another registrar?
Q. Someone I cannot have any relationship with anymore bought me the domain for my website. I am an author and there has been plenty of hits now on my website, so I don't want to change it. Anyone know the process for having the domain transfered into my name from the original purchaser's? Any ideas at all on this will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A. You should get an email with the authorization code from the seller or original registrar of the purchased domain name. You will need to use that code to accept the transfer. And the seller will have to confirm the transfer on his end to make it faster. Otherwise you typically have a bit of a wait period when transfering between registrars. You can learn alot from chatting with other domainers live. That's what I do.. lol I listed my source :)

What is a domain name and how do I go about getting one?

A. A domain name is a web address like www.google.com. It is used in place of an IP address to locate a remote server/computer. To get one, you can either a) purchase it directly from ICANN (costs lots of money, not easy to do) , or b) pay a registrar (such as godaddy.com or 1&1.com) a small fee (mine is like $5.00 /yr) to hold a domain name for you. While you continue to pay that fee, the domain is registered in your name and is yours to use as you wish.
