How can we get our ac to auto shutoff?
Q. Our ac in our 2bdrm apt keeps running. Thermostat is set on auto and temp is set at 75. The reading has been just below 80 and hasnt moved for most of the day. We have had the ac on all day and the temp on the thermostat doesnt move. So is this a thermostat problem or ac? It does feel nice and cool in the apt but the ac keeps running. The maintenance folks have changed the thermostat several times already.
Asked by my4kids859 - Tue Jun 12 19:42:29 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hmm, lets hash this out for a minute. The thermostat usually does 3 basic things. It is a thermometer that measures and displays the temperature, it is a simple switch set to activate by temperature changes and it is a relay that sends signals to another high current switch at the AC control unit. My guess is that the maintenance folks smudged the last install, because the thermometer should move regardless of whether the on/off signals are sent to the AC. If the thermometer doesn't work, how can the switch activate to relay the signals to the AC? My opinion is a faulty or uncalibrated temperature sensor / thermometer. Hope this helps

Window ac compressor makes a rattling sound but won't start?
Q. I have a wallmaster fridgaire window AC when i turn it on the fan comes on ok . when the compressor kicks in it makes a rattling noise for a a few seconds and doesnt start. I am thinking the compressor (low freon) vs capacitor but how do i check it out.

A. A lot of people think capacitor is some cranking device well is not.Start and run capacitors alike are put in the system for efficiency or the power factor, U know know, where it shows the power factor is .8 or .9 Using capacitor will bring that number closer to one making motor more efficient.I agree with PAPA C.inside the compressor the whole assembly is rested on springs,if one of them breaks, that is it for compressor. My dad used to cut them and weld them back,That is back 20 years in Europe.

Q. ok i'm new to having AC in my house...i'm in Missouri and we're averaging between 85/90 during the day... I have my AC set at 78... I was wondering what the energy saver level is? I leave my AC on all day and night... should I turn it off at night? or is it ok to keep it running?
Asked by JazzyKat - Tue Jul 15 19:18:24 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. i dont know what type you have, but some really fancy new ones usually come with a standard room temp. what this does is, reguklate the temp to stay at that temp only. so if you were to put it on say 78, but you dont want to waste energy when the room is at that temp, then it will automatically stop heating until it recognises its getting colder! Fancy huh!

How do I turn on the AC in my house?
Q. We just into this house and it has a new AC unit, never used. I flipped the switch outside in the box that is attached to the house, and the fuses are "on" in the box in the basement. As far as I can tell here is no "on" switch on the unit itself. I turned the temostat to "cool" and set it at 60. it is 70 in my house now and I've got no action on th part of the AC unit. If this helps it is a Nordyne GS3BA0-018KA. I am hot, please cool me off!
Asked by erichhughes - Sat May 27 09:52:37 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Make sure the power is on to the furnace or blower coil. That powers up the t-stat and makes the system work. An easy check is to flip the fan on/auto switch to on and see if the fan comes on. If it does, then the power is on to the furnace. Next try is to go outside and have someone flip the t-stat up and down. you should hear a clicking noise in the condenser outside. If yo hear it, then the power to the condenser is off, or fuse is bad. Hope this helps! Good luck!

What is the best measurement for AC efficiency?
Q. My apt unit provides ACs for the tenants. They took my original AC out because it wasn't working properly and replaced it with one that doesn't work as efficiently. When I noted this the maintenance guy said that since the AC is pumping out cold air it is working. However, the unit isn't cooling the apartment nearly as well and I don't hear a second motor running that I heard in the first. Now all I have is the fan. It is 14,000 BTUs, my apartment is 750 sq feet, an the unit is 4ft 6 x 1 ft x 3.5 ft (it's huge). Which is another argument I have as to why it should be able to cool my apartment. Currently, set at the coldest temp it is only getting to around 74 degrees and then the unit turns off. With my old unit, I never ran it at… [cont.]

A. Yes, you have unrealistic expectations. If you aren't directly paying for the electricity and you didn't pay for the unit, then you really don't have any reason to give them your input -- you're getting cooled off and it doesn't cost you any more or less than the previous A/C. You have to get used to a different set of controls, but that's hardly a reason for the management to keep replacing A/C units. If it really isn't operating correctly, it will die soon and you'll get another one then anyway.

How come my outside AC unit is running but there's no air blowing through the vents in the house?
Q. This is the first time I've ever had this problem. My central AC unit that's outside is running full speed, I can hear it, but my indoor air vents don't have any air blowing through them. What gives? I just removed the air filter from my inside air unit and everything inside is covered in frost/ice. What is causing this and what do I do?
Asked by hwmabire3 - Mon Oct 29 19:06:07 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hey, First check the filter, if its dirty change it. For now though change your thermostat to cool / off . Either let it sit and defrost itself or put it on fan only and it will defrost. When things settle down you need to check or have someone check your a/c coil ( its called an A coil, that's the shape of the coil.) If its clogged that will cause the same problem of frosting up. Most of the time its the filter. Look at the outside unit, if its real dirty that could cause it. The fan in your inside unit may be clogged with dirt and that lowers the airflow, that will cause it. Last thing is low gas pressure, Low Freon will cause this problem. If you check all the others and they are good, make sure whoever checks the pressures… [cont.]

Q. last year around sept. our electricity went out around four times. after the forth time the AC stopped working. we called the electric company and they said that there was no away that it could be their fault. we just recently got the ac fixed (it was the compacitor) and after two days of it working again it blew a braker. we have notice our lights in the house serging and blowing when we turn them on. is it possible that this could be an electric problem and not an ac problem? and if it is what could it be?

A. Yes. Voltage fluctuations can damage A.C. units. At low voltage, the unit draws more amperes and overheats. It would take a very severe over-voltage to damage the capacitor though. When you complain to the Utility mention that the lights are 'surging'. It should get their attention.

A. Yes! I am a ticket agent for an airline, so I know this for sure. Take the a/c adapter with you instead of putting it in your checked luggage just in case your luggage is lost you will have a way to charge it. You will be able to charge it during layovers in the boarding area... you just have to look closely for an outlet.

A. AC and DC are completely different. Your digi cam is designed and capable of only accepting DC low level power. If you plug AC into it it will not work and/or will FRY the camera circuits if the voltage is rated to high. You must get an adapter that puts out the required DC voltage AND the amperage in order to work.

A. you need to have a potential relay and start capacitor installed in place of the hard start kit, they work a whole lot better. Hope your compressor makes it through and good luck with your a/c.

Asked by lpdunit107 - Sun Jun 15 17:04:14 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is possible, if you have the knowhow. Having said that, it would be better for you to go ahead and replace the ac compressor as a unit, instead of trying to take it apart and fix that clutch and then have something else fail shortly after putting it back on. Add that the costs of a rebuild could make the job almost as expensive as just getting the compressor as a whole unit. Please also check your drier and evaporator for damage and wear as well. Good luck.

How do I set my central AC unit so that it recirculates only?
Q. I live in San Diego and have a young baby. I was told to keep the windows shut and run the AC on recirculate. I have been running the AC, but I don't know how to set it so that it does not draw in the outside air, and I think it's pulling air in from outside. So scared, not sure what to do. It's a Rheem central AC unit. Can anyone help me?

A. who told you that? What's wrong with the air? Its not poisonous, just a little smoky. What happens after you've depleted all the oxygen in your apartment? Its not that critical- some makeup air thru your AC unit is gonna be a good thing. Keep the filter on your AC clean and all that gonna happen is the air will smell like fire, but the overall quality will be fine.

What is the AC Voltage at which domestic electricity is supplied in India ?
Q. I am confused about this figure because some equipments have 230 Volts AC (50 Hz) specified as their operating voltage while some others have 240 V AC (Hz). I practically measured the supplied voltage. It was something like 235 V AC. So I am confused about the standard figure. Is it 230 V AC or 240 V AC ?
Asked by Prashant - Thu Feb 12 07:00:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you measured the supply you must be in India. Why don't you call the electricity supply people and ask them what their official figure is? You should also ask them within what limits the variation is controlled. The difference in the figure stated on an item of electrical equipment, i.e. 230 vs 240, is irrelevant. They all will have a margin, maybe plus or minus 10 or 15%, within which they will work satisfactorily.

What is the best way to install a portable ac for swing-out casement window?

A. if you can open the casement window far enough to fit the cooler in there it should be fine. i did a similar installation in a previous home. however i did not use the standard window kit. i never liked the fact that now the window is totally closed off. try using Plexiglas and aluminum channel to make a " replacement window" cut to the exact size and shape to fill the gaps. you can still see out and get light in this way. it looked much cleaner.
