Can closing ac vents in my house save me money?
Q. If i close my ac vent in my bedroom while im not using it save me any money? Also can it hurt to ac system? I have it closed now and the vents in my living are putting out a lot of air.
Asked by TOOTAl2 - Sun Apr 26 15:30:12 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you are closing the vent in an area that is unused for days or weeks, then it will save money, but simply shutting off a room while you are out of it will have little effect since you will need to crank up the cool when you come back into the room. Unless you can turn down the volume when you close vents, then the open rooms will experience a higher volume of air and feel colder. There will also, likely, be no significant savings. The same savings will work for heat in winter.

Can an attic get too hot causing a mist of water to blow out of my AC vents?
Q. I have a mist of water that blows out my home ac vents. hat do i need to do?
Asked by hubcap - Thu Jun 25 17:22:05 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That's because the AC isn't removing all of the humidity from the air and, when it does cool the air, the temperature drops below the dew point for that level of humidity. Hence the misting. The dew point is the temperature for a given humidity at which water condenses out of the air. This is how clouds and fog are formed - the temperature goes below the dew point. This misting doesn't harm anything. It just dissipates into the air in the room. And, I actually think it's pretty cool.

How do we get rid of these black AC filter-lookin' particles blowing from the AC vents on a '02 Mazda 626?
Q. It's nasty! Whenever we turn the AC on, these little black particles come flying out of the vents. It's coming from right inside the vents, where I can see some sort of filter-type material lining the sides of the ducts. Is there any way to get a replacement element, and is it a PITA to get the vents off in order to get in there and get the task done? Or would it be better to simply rip out the remaining filter stuff and leave it bare?

A. I had the same problem with my Ford, some sort of black thin foam stuff. I had to carefully pry the vents off, and I tape a cut out section of a house ac filter in place, then replaced the vents, worked fine, and didn't obstruct the air flow.

How do I attach wood paneling to my acura tl ac vents?
Q. I have wood panels for my ac vents that have little stick on things, but they arent sticky, how do I get them to attach to the car?
Asked by jah4200 - Thu May 11 03:06:49 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can go several ways. Gorilla Glue will give you the best stick, but it dries puffy and may come out the sides. I used it for an old Lexus I got and I had to go back and chip it off the edges with a razor. You could use superglue gel which will hold well but tends to slide so you have to hold it in place for a bit. Or you could use some spray adhesive usually sold at auto parts store. The spray will work but you have to careful about getting it on the wooded sides. Your best bet is to hire a professional (upholstery shop) to do the job. If they mess up then you at least have some kind of recourse. If you go it alone and mess up then you are just the guy with the crazy looking woodpanels in his TL.

Does closing AC vents really save electricity?
Q. I closed off the AC vent and closed the door to the guest room in our house since we never use the room. Does that actually save electricity or is that just a myth?
Asked by Russell B - Thu Jun 19 12:46:11 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes it does save electricity. By closing off areas of the house that you aren't using and closing the AC vent, you are reducing the load on your air conditioner.

Is it wrong to adjust the ac damper vents in the ceiling ?
Q. I was told years ago not to mess with the ceiling vents. But one bathroom is much colder than the rest of our two story house. It has two outside ac units and is a 4500 square foot home.

A. No problem to adjusting the vent and if its the air starts to whistle and make noise there should be a damper in the supply to each vent which is located at each fitting on the main duct and that can be adjusted and will eliminate the noise. Hope this helps

A. It sounds as if the vent control switch knob or lever on the dash is not closing or adjusting the vent doors inside the heater duct-work. The fan switch may be stuck so that the fan is blowing whether you need it or not.

A. lot of ac are in the attic let the air come down to the room so if the feed line done have alot insulation on them then the hot air from the room and the air from the attic will mix and then you well get water coming out. keep the heat in the room not in the attic.

Where do I find a window AC unit without side vents?
Q. Greetings all - I live on the first floor of a city apartment with bars on the lower portion of my windows. Unfortunately, the bars are only about 6 3/4" from the interior window frame. The window AC units that I've seen all have a depth of at least 12". Does anyone know of a unit that will fit this situation? I'm trying to find one w/o side vents so I'm not defeating the purpose by mixing hot and cold air in the room. The window sill edge on the inside is about 16" from the bars so I can at least support most units from below. Also, I can't have the unit up against the bars since I'm sure the rattling will keep me awake. I do have a portable AC unit for the living room that does the job. But, they're less efficient and more… [cont.]

A. They make them. I think they're called shell A/Cs. They're not portable, and are built to fit in an encasement, but should still get some ventilation or the condensor will burn up. They are quite expensive too, at least 5 times what you pay for a portable. You won't find them in Sears or Wal-Mart. In my area, they're only available through one of those "I have the hard to find," mom & pop appliance stores.

What could possibly be causing the smell coming through my ac/heating vents?
Q. I just started smelling what i can only describe as an exhaust or gas smell coming from the vents of my 2004 Toyota Matrix. I've replaced the air filters in the car every 3000 miles with the oil change but i don't know what it could be. If anyone has an idea, I would appreciate it if you'd let me know, so that when i take it to the mechanic, i'm not taken for a ride. Thank you.
Asked by Scubachick76 - Mon Mar 16 20:10:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I would guess your car has a small exhaust or EGR leak and the fumes are getting sucked in through your HVAC system... BTW, changing the air filter every oil change is unnecessary, on average every 25,000 miles is sufficient. Replace the cabin filter if so equipped.

I have an oder coming from my AC vents at home similar to mothballs the system was just checked?
Q. two weeks ago...
Asked by BRK - Tue Apr 24 17:26:05 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If, when the system was checked, they didn't clean the evaporator coil, then you should (or have someone do it). And replace the filter. You can get coil cleaner at any HVAC, or appliance supply store. After doing this, if you still have the odor, inspect the ductwork for mold, or even possibly deceased animals. Also, if you have a package unit, remove the panels (after killing the power supply to the unit!), and check for animals. Good Luck.

Something wrong w/ AC vents on Ford Explorer?
Q. I have a 98 Ford Explorer. The middle AC vent module (containing 2 vents - above the stereo) has mysteriously come undone and is loose within it's housing. I can push it in and out. Is this common? How could this have happened? Could this be a sign that someone has tampered with the front dash console?
Asked by unknown - Tue Jun 2 14:35:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This thing snaps in to place. I install stereo's for a living. The 98 explorer center bezel has some strong push clips. The bezel does not just come loose by it's self. Someone probably tried to remove it in my opinion. Just try to smack it back in to place. If it does not stay in place you might need to buy new push clips that are on the backside to get it to lock back in to place.

Why do my car vents smell bad when I turn on the AC?
Q. Everytime I turn on the AC or just the fan a bad smell comes out of the vents, kind of like mildew mixed with dog poo. Does anyone know why? I changed my air filter not long ago.
Asked by 1big teddy graham - Tue Jun 20 16:52:39 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The air filter in your car doesn't filter the interior (cabin) air; it just filters air going into the engine for combustion purposes. Some cars have a totally separate CABIN air filter to keep dust, etc. from coming through the vents. The air conditioning compressor generates some moisture due to condensation... this moisture can form a small amount of mildew at times, and that's the smell that kicks in as your fan is first coming on. A quickie fix... spray some air freshener into each vent opening, then run your HEATER full blast for a few minutes...it should dry up the mildewed areas inside the vents and freshen the air for you. Check to see if your vehicle has a "CABIN" air filter that filters the incoming air... a dealer or Auto… [cont.]
