How do I set my central AC unit so that it recirculates only?
Q. I live in San Diego and have a young baby. I was told to keep the windows shut and run the AC on recirculate. I have been running the AC, but I don't know how to set it so that it does not draw in the outside air, and I think it's pulling air in from outside. So scared, not sure what to do. It's a Rheem central AC unit. Can anyone help me?

A. who told you that? What's wrong with the air? Its not poisonous, just a little smoky. What happens after you've depleted all the oxygen in your apartment? Its not that critical- some makeup air thru your AC unit is gonna be a good thing. Keep the filter on your AC clean and all that gonna happen is the air will smell like fire, but the overall quality will be fine.

A. sounds like a bad fan relay switch in the furnace to me. normally the fan will be turned on by either a sequencer or a temperature swithch in heating mode and a fan relay in cooling mode. if it has a fan relay the way to check it is to find the terminals designated for the relay coil and ohm it out with a meter. you should read measurable resistance in the coil. if it is a newer unit with a circuit board check for 24 volts from the g terminal to the c terminal. if you have 24 volts most likely you have a faulty circuit board. hope this helps also do not cross or jump wires as other people have said. if you dont know what you are doing you will fry the transformer and be in an even bigger mess. not all units are fuse protected

A. To find the ac requirements, a load calculation is required. This requires more information such as amount of IT equipment, windows, location, etc. For more info, check out my source.

How many central AC units do I need?
Q. My house is 3325 square feet, 1 story, and one sun room open through the family room. It located in North of Dallas Texas. How many central AC units do I need? or how many ton? (It is 14 SEER)
Asked by PD N - Tue Feb 12 10:58:27 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sizing AC units needs an inspection. It takes into consideration the number of windows and doors. If a company uses only the square footage of your home to install a unit, you will not be happy with it. In your case, they will probably recommend two units at around 3 ton each. Ducts will be another consideration.

Fan Motor on Central AC turns for 5min but then stops turning?
Q. My central AC unit stopped working. The fan stopped turning so I replaced the capacitor. This did not work so I replaced the motor. The fan turns but not as fast as it has in the past or should. After about 5 minutes the fan stops turning and no more cool air. I also changed the breaker. Any suggestions?

A. Sounds like the contactor. Find the contactor and push in see if it works. Points probally shot on it. Simple to tell after locating it. Turn power off and locate. Be careful do not do if you are not comfortable.

my central AC blows but it is not cold?
Q. Two weeks ago I had my compressor and fan replaced on my central AC unit. During those two weeks I noticed that the lines going into the outside unit were sweating. This never happened prior to having the parts replaced. Yesterday I came home to a very hot house. The inside fan was blowing but the outside unit was not doing anything. I also noticed that the circuit breaker was flipped. I tried reseting the breaker and turning the unit back on but still no luck. During this 2 weeks, I never set the thermostat lower than 80. Did all the freon leak out? Is this the reason for the circuit breaker flipping?
Asked by greg t - Wed Aug 22 19:41:15 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 2 things are wrong if it is sweating like you described: 1. there is to much freon 2. there is to little freon also try wrapping the pipes with an insulator.

A. Our house is around 1500 sq ft and we had to replace ours because ours broke from old age. The cost to get a new one with installation was around $5000. Shop around. We live in phoenix, az which is hot for a majority of the year, so we definitely needed a good one. Good luck.

Q. I'm buying a house with 100A Service, and installing a 2 Ton Central AC. Will I have to upgrade to 200A service or can i get by ok? From what i have read it requires about 40amps There is already a 220V Line ran for the Dryer if this helps any.

A. It depends what other loads there are, but usually a 100 amp service is plenty to add central AC. Modern 2 ton units take 20 amps at 240 volts.

Q. I never had a central ac in my house. In AZ I now haveone, i live in a new 2400 sq foot house. Whats some good tips on energy savings. Should I turn it off or lower (seting at higher temp) at night? But in morining or when I want it copoler, wont it take that muchmore then to get it cool again, is it a good idea to just leave it on? How do thet compare to window ac's?

A. Get a digital thermostat with programming. You can set the temperature for 4 or more times during the day to whatever you want. As the day gets hotter, and you aren't home - you can set it to go off to save money and have it come on just before you get home so that it will be nice and cool for when you are there. It cuts the cost of electricity and saves money.

the standard central AC compressor can operate voltage?
Q. Any information which talking about the standard central AC compressor can operate at 200 V, but 190 V is at the low end of the voltage range that the motor was designed for.
Asked by Patrick C - Sun Apr 6 13:30:47 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Patrick, we have already answered this question. Look at the operators manual or any documentation for the minimum operating voltage. Below that you will need some sort of voltage booster or regulator. It's really very straight forward. if x is the lower spec, then it will work for values equal to or greater than x. For voltages below x it may or may not operate. No guarantees.

is it cheaper to cool a place with central AC and a ceiling fan or just the central AC?
Q. ive heard the fans circulate the cold air better thus reducing the running of the AC...not sure.
Asked by Mike T - Sun Nov 4 02:22:35 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A fan does not cool, it only increases the windchill factor making the room seem cooler so your A/C will run just as much. However you may be able to get by running the A/C at a higher temp since the ceiling fan will make it seem cooler. So in that case they will save you money. I do not like air blowing right on me so I'm not a big "fan" of ceiling fans, but they do work well for some people. The thumbs down person is wrong, read the link below.

Does leaving interior doors open help a central AC system work better?
Q. My husband is convinced that leaving all the interior doors open will help with air circulation while the AC is on, but that means less privacy for everyone. I can't find anything to back up his argument. I doubt he'll change his mind, but can anyone tell me if this really makes a difference, for my own information?? Thanks.
Asked by Jocelyn F - Wed May 13 20:48:00 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It does help some as you will usually have only one return air vent. This pulls the air back through the system. Privacy is sometimes more important though. At least to me.

Is there building code on where the central AC compressors should be installed?
Q. Our new construction home is scheduled to close next month., but the location of the AC compressors is really annoying. The compressors were right on one edge of our extented patio at first. I think that is a design flaw I had not expected. Other houses don't have our issues since our house is flipped. I expressed my concern to the builder on the safety (kids will play on the patio)and noise issues. They said it was impossible to move to the other side at the current stage. However they did move a little bit to allow a seperation (one foot, with some plants put there). I really appreciate their gesture. But is that really what can be done? Is is possible that the current location violates some building code? How to find out if that… [cont.]

Why is my central AC not blowing cold air?
Q. It's 83 degrees in my house with the AC running continuously (until I realized it wasn't cooling and shut it off). I suspect the coolant level is low, which suggests there's a leak somewhere - is this an expensive fix, if my hunch is correct? I have AC people coming tomorrow and would like to know a little rather than be a "dumb ol' girl". :) Thanks for your help! Hey, thanks for your thoughts & inputs. Service person just left after replacing a capacitor. I'm down to 79 degrees and am happy again!!!

A. Did you clean the filter? My window a/c wasn't cooling off the room it was in, never mind the rest of the apartment. I took out the filter, rinsed all the dust and dirt off it, and now I have to set it at 70 degrees or I freeze! If yours is a central a/c, then I don't know.

Need help with buying a new central AC unit?
Q. I am fixing to buy either a 4 ton or a 5 ton AC unit from a friend. He has both available for sale for 500.00 a piece. With a leak from the inside coil unit in my current system, I need to start looking for a new one - and I can't pass it up at that price. I am fixing to go down to look at the units, but I have no idea what to look for. He says they are brand new in the box, but what are some things I need to know before I buy? My current system is a 20 year old carrier and the one I will buy is a Rheem. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated.

A. for one you wont have no warranty and most installers that sell new unit offers up to ten years parts and labor warranty...2 you will still have to get a licensed serviceman to come and assemble it and do all the things it will need done in order for it to cool such as make sure the right amount of freon is in unit...precheck for leaks and make sure your duct system will work ...3 dependin on how many tons the unit is that you have now , will the ductwork be compatable...you cant put a 4 or 5 ton unit on ductwork designed for a three ton unit...rheem is a good unit ...

How much freon does a Central AC unit need to freeze over?
Q. I have a Payne central air and heating system, and the lines were freezing over. The tech came and said that he put 11 pounds of freon in, when my unit only holds 7.6 pounds. There is no more than 25 foot of line from my outside to inside unit. I have heard that you need more than half of your total charge to even freeze your unit over. Is this true? ok guys, I guess I worded this question wrong. The unit is now temp. working correctly after being charged with 11 pounds of R-22. What I want to know is how did he fit that much in there, or did I get scammed? I have heard that your unit needs to be at least half-full of freon, to even freeze over, because once it is that low, it doesn't get cool enough to freeze the lines. How true… [cont.]
Asked by Carl - Fri May 11 09:54:49 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A low refrigerant charge will cause freezing. No or very little refrigerant charge will not cause freezing. Eleven pounds of R-22 sounds like a heck of a lot. I base that on the fact that Carrier makes these units and I have worked for more than one Carrier dealership. I do have an additional question, however. WHERE did it go? Did the mechanic look for a leak? Looking for leaks these days is not optional. It is required by law. All in all I have to throw in with your other answerers. Something doesn't sound right.
