What's the difference between domain name system and domain name server?
Q. What's the difference between domain name system and domain name server?

A. Hello, The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource participating in the Internet. It associates various information with domain names assigned to such participants. Most importantly, it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices world-wide. An often used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, www.example.com translates to 208.77.188.166. A domain name server (or name server) is a computer that houses DNS zones… [cont.]

How to register a domain name without revealing personal information?
Q. For an example, a person wants to create a website about politics. And the discussions on the site might be somewhat radical, which can cause trouble to the founder if their information is revealed. How can that person own a domain name without revealing personal information? PS: I've heard of a feature called "private registration." Is it a safe and risk-free way?

A. Most registrars will give you the option of putting their information rather than yours as the official contact information for the domain. This is perfectly safe.

What makes a domain name a successful business?
Q. There are plenty of damin names out there with potential. Potential means nothing without a business plan. If you have a domain name that you feel is worth money, you are wrong. A domain name by itself is worthless unless there is someone out there who is willing to invest in it.

A. Making money from domain names is not limited anymore to the buying and selling of domain names. True, the true value of a domain name is hard to predict. Its value is dictated by the amount of money a person/organization is willing to pay for it. It's a hit and miss business - you may find some names you think are worth high only to find no takers. But the business of domain name has evolved. Before, your only option is to buy a domain name, and wait for someone interested to buy it. Now you can earn money from your domain names without selling them. All you have to do it to put advertising on it. Google has a domain park program where you can put Adsense ads on your domain. And wait for type in traffic (those who type in the URL and… [cont.]

I have a domain name and unused hosting. What's a good business idea for an online business?
Q. I have a very catchy domain name, and a hosting server laying around for about a year now. I want to start some type of online business, but I'm only sixteen. What I want to start is a business that will get me some money in my pockets, not a billionaire. What are some good ideas I should start? I've tried selling my things on ebay, but that's not really what I want to do. I want to provide a service, or anything on my website to make money.

How do major websites get a domain name?
Q. How do major websites get domain names without going through a web hosting company? Why can't you just own the name without paying a yearly fee?
Asked by Bri up - Sat Sep 29 00:08:10 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. GoDaddy has domain names for $9.99 per year. One of the lowest out there that has the reputation and that I would recommend. They do free hosting as well. (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has overall responsibility for managing the DNS. It controls the root domain, delegating control over each top-level domain to a domain name registry. Domain names which are theoretically leased can be considered in the same way as real estate, due to a significant impact on online brand building, advertising, search engine optimization, etc. One of the reasons for the value of domain names is that even without advertising or marketing, they attract clients seeking services and products who simply type in the generic name.

If you sell a domain name you have owned for 13 years do you pay capital gains taxes on thoses monies?
Q. If not what taxes would you pay and if you sell the domain next year (2008) are you exempt from CGT under the rule that if you fall into the 10% to !5% tax bracket you pay no CGT in 2008. This would be in the United States. Obviously we would make a profit from the sale of the domain name.

Where is the best place to buy a domain name with software included?
Q. I'm trying to start an online store for my senior inquiry project in high school. What is the best website to buy a domain name with some easy to follow, learn-as-you-go software? Is this going to be harder than I expect?
Asked by krisviola1 - Wed Nov 19 17:49:36 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. When you buy a domain name you are purchasing a right to use a system that converts the name into an internet address. You then must purchase a website from a web hosting service; godaddy.com , hostmonster.com are two I know. Google "web hosting". Then you need site software for your store. joomla might be a good place to start. If your store isnt real, ie you arent going to collect money, dont worry about a SSL certificate. The answer to your last question is YES. Have fun!

How to get back the domain name hosting if the host company is not responding request?
Q. How to get back the domain name hosting if the host company is not responding request, or out of business?
Asked by John J - Tue May 5 12:58:36 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you registered the domain name though a different provider, such as GoDaddy, you can simply start up with a new Web host, transfer your domain name servers to them (ask tech support how), and all will be fine. Otherwise, if your Web host also registered your domain name for you, you will likely need a new Web professional to help you determine how to regain control of your domain. This is technically something you could do yourself with a whois query and some effort, but if you don't know how, the process will take much longer and be much more difficult than simply paying someone to fix it for you.

A. A domain name is a web address like www.google.com. It is used in place of an IP address to locate a remote server/computer. To get one, you can either a) purchase it directly from ICANN (costs lots of money, not easy to do) , or b) pay a registrar (such as godaddy.com or 1&1.com) a small fee (mine is like $5.00 /yr) to hold a domain name for you. While you continue to pay that fee, the domain is registered in your name and is yours to use as you wish.
