If you sell a domain name you have owned for 13 years do you pay capital gains taxes on thoses monies?
Q. If not what taxes would you pay and if you sell the domain next year (2008) are you exempt from CGT under the rule that if you fall into the 10% to !5% tax bracket you pay no CGT in 2008. This would be in the United States. Obviously we would make a profit from the sale of the domain name.

If you registered the domain name though a different provider, such as GoDaddy, you can simply start up with a new Web host, transfer your domain name servers to them (ask tech support how), and all will be fine. Otherwise, if your Web host also registered your domain name for you, you will likely need a new Web professional to help you determine how to regain control of your domain. This is technically something you could do yourself with a whois query and some effort, but if you don't know how, the process will take much longer and be much more difficult than simply paying someone to fix it for you.

A. A domain name is a web address like www.google.com. It is used in place of an IP address to locate a remote server/computer. To get one, you can either a) purchase it directly from ICANN (costs lots of money, not easy to do) , or b) pay a registrar (such as godaddy.com or 1&1.com) a small fee (mine is like $5.00 /yr) to hold a domain name for you. While you continue to pay that fee, the domain is registered in your name and is yours to use as you wish.

Q. I am doing a research project for my class and I need to answer this question: "What is a domain name and how do I go about getting one?" I read a few articles, but no one gives me, an average computer dummy:), a simple and full answer. Thanks in advance!
