What stopped any single company from buying up all the good domain names in the Internets beginning?
Q. Example lets say you were a company that had the ability to create domain names to sell... what stopped any particular company from creating and hold for themselves all the good one word www names like ... cooking.com , autos.com, or anything else you can imagine.. for themselves?
Asked by rpyszk - Mon Nov 3 16:36:39 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Quite simply, nobody thought of it. Remember, back then, folks weren't nearly as net-savvy as they are now, and no-one thought that domain names would go for the sort of crazy money being asked for them now. The purpose for which the net was originally programmed (of exchanging information/data between scientists) never even envisaged the sort of net we have now. By the time folks started to realise what was happening, it was way too late for anyone to try this sort of stunt--they'd have needed the resources of Lichtenstein, the Bahamas and the gnomes of Zurich all rolled into one. Maybe this is a good thing--after all, can you imagine what would happen if someone like Bill Gates got control over domain names?? Hope This of Help Scots

What is the best way to maximize the revenue from parked domain names?
Q. For instance I have heard radio commercials for parked domain names but I always thought that was a violation of the aggregators terms of service.
Asked by John J. - Tue Dec 18 19:37:04 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most domain name parking companies do not allow outside promotion or linking to parked pages. Check your terms of service before you try anything. You should be able to select the keywords on your page, however most search engines will not index a parked page. The key is to have a good domain name that receives a lot of type in traffic.

Where do websites such as Google get their domain names from?
Q. Sites such as Google, Yahoo and YouTube. Where do they get their domain names from? I know there are domain hosting sites out there, but surely these sites are way to big for little domain hosting sites. So where do they get them from? A nice detailed answer for best answer.

A. Domain name = web address. Most of the major companies will pay big money for a domain name if it already taken and they want to develop and brand on it. Domain names need a web host (server) to store the data and make it accessible to the web surfing public. Most of the major companies like you have mentioned have their own servers in datacenters. i.e. Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the world

How do domain names really work?
Q. I know that there are databases where domain names and IP addresses are matched? But how do those correspond to what we see on the internet? And when you pay for a domain name what are you actually paying for if your just putting an entry in a database?
Asked by naiyucko - Mon Dec 1 23:48:54 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Domain names = the address of the domain holder on the WAN. When you click a link, or enter a 'www' address, your computer sends a 'packet' that requests a 'visit' to that address. (Think of it as a 'drive thru' window at McDonalds). Your packet requests a specific page; it may be to look at the entire menu (the homepage or index), or it may be a specific item on the menu (some specific page for whatever stuff is available at the 'window'). That 'drive thru' then sends whatever it has available, from all the available items, back to you, as your packet has requested. Payments are for maintaining the addresses, running the servers, overhead, etc.

I do use the free hosting for one of my wordpress blogs. I have my other blogs hosted there also along with the domain names. Hope this helps. TG

A. You are going to need to check your host help section. Generally one uploads with an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program with your site user and password entered into the program. Some hosting control panels provide file management through your browser, allowing upload with no external application.

Asked by Chris W - Mon Feb 8 21:12:56 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If your dad already makes money this way, you have a great mentor right in the house. Lemme say this... First, don't buy any ebooks or get rich quick domain junk...no matter how good it sounds. Second, you are not too late. New people are still getting in and making money. However...it's not going to be quick and easy money. So here's my advice. Go to the two best domainers forums (Namepros and DNForum). Read the posts like crazy. Also watch what sells everyday to get an idea of prices. In this economy, it's not easy any more to make quick money selling to other domainers. It's even harder to sell them on Ebay. Don't even go there. Much of the material you will read in ebooks (if you break down and buy one) or elsewhere was written… [cont.]

A. Mostly, these days it does not. If you have something that someone wants bad enough they'll go to a lawyer to get it. I register my domain names from the ICANN registrar for $8/year. I also have a service I subscribe to that will register any other domain names I want as soon as the owner lets them lapse. 2 seconds of non-renewal and it's mine.

How do people obtain the rights to sell Top Level Domain Names?
Q. How can people sell domain names and hosting? Where do they get the domain names from? If I had my own server (or made my computer one), would I need to pay someone to host my website and to get a top level domain? Thanks! How do those places (like go daddy) get the Top Level Domain Names in the first place?
Asked by redfox1160 - Sun Aug 3 12:51:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ICANN has a defined procedure to make accredited registrars (like godaddy). It's a highly expensive task and only serious domain name businesses choose to follow that path. I don't want to enter the specifics but i assume you're not interested for this (i gave you some links below to check just for your information). Additional to the cost for the registrar you need to prepay in packs the domains you will sell from the registry operator. All these above are for official registrars and not for simple domain resellers. For hosting is pretty simple. You rent a dedicated server from a datacenter, share the memory, bandwidth and hard disk resources to many clients and you easily sell shared webhosting packs. You can also buy VPS hosting plans… [cont.]

Can I use two different domain names for one web host?
Q. I bought two domain names and I want to point them both to the same web host. Basically, I have a website up at a web hosting place and I would like to point two domain names to it. I have the DNS addresses for my web hosting place, but can it share two domain names?

A. Yes it can. One will be the main domain, and the other will be an "add-on domain" it shouldn't cost you any extra. IMO, get a host that uses cpanal, its the best control panal out there, and worth the extra dollar or two you'll pay a month, by a LOT.

A. There are numerous venues to sell domain names. tdnam.com is GoDaddy's auction site. It's free to list your domain for sale if GoDaddy is the registrar. eBay is another viable venue to sell domain names. I've sold a handful of domains on eBay, and it's a fairly easy process. There is also sedo.com. It's one of the best known locations to sell domains. They sell some of the biggest, most expensive domain names around. It really depends on how much your domain is valued when using sedo.com. They charge a minimum for $50 for a completed sale. Another good resource for selling domain names is NamePros.com. It's a resource for domainers, and they have a board set aside just to sell domain names. Good luck to you. Leona.

A. If you're just starting out (or even if you're fairly advanced with this) I would suggest going and having a look at Synthasite.com.They offer free hosting without ads and offer easily the most superior free website builder out there. You start off by using free sub-domains with them and then, when you need to,you buy domains for your sites and continue with the free hosting. Many other services offer free hosting but almost all of them crowd you out with advertising and extremely cramped development options. Try Synthasite - you'll thank me!

Is there a way to find out the entire list of domain names that a person or company owns?
Q. For example, I am doing research on Company X and want to know what domain names are owned by Company X. Is this possible to do? Thanks.
Asked by Smith Redyk - Mon Feb 25 16:33:01 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. You can check individual domains, so you can certainly tell whether Company A owns a certain domain, but there are no laws that govern who can own a domain, and the domain registrar does not care who pays for it. By this reasoning, Company A may own no domains at all, but the IT Director may own hundreds, all of which were paid for by Company A. So even if you could search by owner, it would be non-informative at best. At one point, InterNIC issued unique ID's to all registrants, technical, and admin contacts, which was supposed to help in tracking who owned what, but the pool grew so large that it became impossible to maintain. Furthermore, if a user didn't keep track of his ID, he would be issued a new one each time he… [cont.]
