A hostname is a label that is assigned to a device connected to a computer network and that is used to identify the device in various forms of electronic communication such as the World Wide Web, e-mail or Usenet. Hostnames may be simple names consisting of a single word of phrase, or they may include the name of a Domain Name System (DNS) domain at the end, that is separated from the host specific label by a full stop (dot). In the latter form, a hostname is also called a domain name. If the domain name is completely specified including a top-level domain of the Internet, the hostname is said to be a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).

Hostnames that include DNS domains are often stored in the Domain Name System together with IP addresses of the host they represent for the purpose of mapping the hostname to an address, or the reverse process.

How can I find more info on a particular computer based on the IP address and hostname?
Q. My firewall's been blocking a lot of stuff from a certain computer but some programs that access the internet haven't been working. I think they might be related but I'm not sure. I need to know how to find out if it's an actual hacker or something related to one of the programs that's not working. I know I just this question twice in a row and it makes me feel like a dirty spammer but I really need to know and thought I'd more likelt to get a good answer if I put it in two categories.

A. You can get various information from IP and host name. You can do a trace route. That will give you a general geo-position. You can run nmap which can fingerprint the OS on the remote machine. You can also get a whois record if the hostname is not just an ISP client address. You can try to finger "postmaster" "admin" "root" or other generic names at the host. You can check RBLs to see if the IP or host is listed. You can try to hit the IP through HTTP, FTP, TELNET, SSH, etc. pretty much all the basic info. You can cull quite a lot from those things. Run a port scan with nmap to find out what is running on the remote IP. Finally you can run it up the upstream ISP and ask them to "fix it".
