how to light pilot light on an o'keefe and merritt stove?
Q. I have an old O'Keefe and Merritt Stove that was in the house when we moved in... like the one here: Anyway, we had to shut off the gas and thus the pilot lights went out. I'm not totally sure where they are and what to do to light them. Any help out there?

A. Remove the grill from the burners, and the plate under it (if it's removable. You should see a tube running from the burner to the pilot light - hold a match to the pilot. Obviously, you shouldn't light a match if you're overwhelmed with the smell of natural gas, but a pilot light is fueled by very little gas - you may get a faint smell. The oven pilot is a little more tricky. There's a red button hidden away somewhere that you have to push (and hold for a few seconds) to get it lit. The oven pilot is near the back of the burner. If you're unsure or uncomfortable with it - call the gas supplier. They'll usually come out to light a pilot.

How to you light the pilot on a Lennox Duraglass GII furnace?
Q. I have an old Lennox Duraglass GII furnace in the house I recently moved into. When the heat kicks on, the system blows cold air, so we believe the pilot light is out. Does anyone have experience lighting this type of furnace? The system has a knob with markings that read OFF and ON, but there's no PILOT marking which is commonly found on these things. I'm confused as to how you put the system into pilot mode to light it up.

A. Ok in case no one else answers let me say this: After turning the knob to the on position, try pushing the knob down like a button. If it works this way, then you'll need to hold it down for a minute after you light the pilot or until the pilot remains lit after you release the knob from the depressed position. Hope this does it for you.

How much does it cost for a pilot light to stay on in gas fireplace?
Q. I just moved into an apartment that has a gas hot water heater and a "decorative" gas fireplace. All the other appliances are electric, including the main heating system. The fireplace doesn't work well for heating purposes and since it's approaching the warmer summer months I wonder if I should have the pilot light shut off to save money? How much gas does just having the pilot light use?
Asked by supercalifragiolistic - Sat Apr 7 01:59:08 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you're not going to use it for for more than a couple of days turn it off. If you use it daily during the colder months, you might as well leave it on b/c the pilot light costs next to nothing, I was told it costs pennies a day to run the pilot. If you really want to know the exact amount- call your gas company.

Do I need to turn off the pilot light off in a gas-fireplace in Summer?
Q. I have a gas fireplace (Heat-N-Glo) in master bedroom. This fireplace has a switch on the wall just like a regular switch for any house lights. The pilot seems a lot bigger than the one seen in gas stove. I am just wondering if it is needed to turn the pilot light off in the summer. If it is good to do, who can do it? If I can do it, how? Thanks!

A. A gas pilot light has a valve that, when you shut it off, will turn off the gas pilot. All you do is turn off the gas valve...(yes, you can do it!). Now, when you go to turn it on, read the iinstruction. It may be like a "furnace" and you have to turn the valve and push it down to start the pilot light, then turn it to on. (basically all gas valves have this, on boilers and furnaces). I would do so, because your needlessly putting heat into the house and defeat the A/C, and also your burning gas for no reason at all :) It will be real easy to turn it off and on. I wish you well.. Is my pilot light out if my house is heating up?
Q. I turned on the heat for the first time today and the air that filled the room was a little musty. It doesn't smell horrible but I just got a little paranoid (I'm an anxious person by nature) that my pilot light might be out, and I have no idea how to get to the furnace to check it. However, within ten minutes of turning my heater on, the thermostat went from reading 50 to reading 60. Would the room even heat up if the pilot light were out?
Asked by Ashley - Sun Nov 11 01:18:02 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's OK if the pilot light is out there is a safety system that will prevent the gas from coming out. In other words it just will not work. Just turn it back on. The smell was the dust burning on the heat exchanger this is normal the first time turning it on in several months. Your pilot light is NOT out. If the smell bothers you open a window to air the place out. If the pilot was out the house would not heat up.

A. The P&S 695G does require that the ground wire be connected to the ground screw on the switch in order to illuminate the pilot light. That wire should be a bare copper or green jacketed wire in the wall box. IF there is not one in the wall box, this might imply that you do not have a grounded system. This should only be the case if your house was built pre-60's.

How do I find where my pilot light is on my furnace?
Q. I thought I would find it quite easily but it turns out that I couldn't find the area where the pilot light is! Obviously I don't want to be throwing flames around where a gas leak is occuring... The results may be...too exciting for me.
Asked by mateo - Sun Dec 17 10:29:36 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. IF it has a pilot...there will be a 1/4" line coming out of the gas valve up to your burners. If no line, then you have either a spark ignition system or a hot surface ignitor. Another way to verify if you have a pilot style system is if your gas valve has "PILOT" setting and not just "OFF or ON"

A. your AC should not do this. If your WH is in a closet or the garage it needs a metal heat shield to block the pilot light. Any metal flashing and some metal screws will do. If it is in the attic, have the AC checked out. The blower should be contained in a box feeding the air into the plenum. A box that serves the duct work. Not into open space or directly at the WH. THis is not normal.

Where is the pilot light on my OLD recessed vented gas heater?
Q. I have a Gaffers & Sattler Mission recessed vented heater. If you open the bottom panel there are instructions on how to light or relight the pilot, but I can't find the little pipe the gas will come from in order to light it. It seems a little haphazard to just wave a match around down there, so I'm wondering if anyone knows where it is. I'm freezing here.

A. Look for a set of instructions that may appear on one of the panels of the heater. They may read something like this: (1) turn the gas dial to "Pilot". While pressing down on the gas dial, press the red push button a few times until the pilot is lit. (2) KEEP holding down the gas dial for about 30 seconds. Then release it. If the pilot light goes out, you probably need to replace your thermocouple (see below). If it stays let, turn the gas dial to ON. Otherwise, turn to OFF and leave the whole thing alone for 5 minutes to let any gas disapate. Replaciing a thermocouple... This is a common home repair. A. I've seen the flame holes get clogged. When this happens, the flame cannot reach the next hole and the flame stops at that point (or doesn't start). Using the suggestion for the toothbrush may work, or try to wire brush to try cleaning along the holes to see if it works.

How come pilot Light not staying lit.?
Q. The furnace in the garage is started by pressing in the knob and then lighting the pilot. I hold it there and it's suppose to get this thing warm and then the gas comes through and lights up. Then the pilot stays on, and I release the knob and turn it to on. The heater kicks in, and when it hits the right temp, it will shut off. But, it won't come back on because the pilot light goes out. Any ideas why?

A. the thermocouple might be bad, or going bad. It is the silver or copper wire looking thing that goes above the pilot light. Maybe it needs to be moved one way or another, so the pilot flame hits the first half inch or so of it. Just a guess, these do go bad sometimes. these are just a few dollars and easy to replace, but if it's bad your device will not work right. Turn off the gas valve before you replace it(the main valve on the gas line )and make sure it is in tight before you turn it back on, you dont want a gas leak. You can have a pro do it, but its not hard if you are carefull.

A. Leave the valve at the wall alone! No need to close it. Just find the rectangle box near the bottom of the tank. There's a knob on the top, says "ON, Pilot,OFF". "Robertshaw" control, turn clockwise from the on position past the pilot position to the off position. For relighting, remove 2 doors, outer and inner, light a match (you may need a fireplace or other longer type), place match next to pilot, turn knob to pilot position, hold red reset button (next to it) down 'til pilot lights. Continue to hold button down for 45 seconds. Release button, replace doors, turn knob to ON position. Hot water in about 30 minutes. "White rogers" control, you will need to stop at the pilot position and push the knob down to turn it off. AND, you… [cont.]

How much gas does a pilot light use?
Q. We are in a new home in the Toronto area, and have the pleasure of having a gas fire place. We don't use it that much, but its such a treat to turn it on when the wind is blowing freezing cold outside. It's a great thing until the bill comes in!!...My question is about the pilot light though...Is it worth to turn the pilot light off when the fire place is not in use?...or does it make that much difference?

A. might be that the damper is not opening and has a safety switch on it keeping the main gas from turning on !
