A network interface controller (NIC) is a hardware device that handles an interface to a computer network and allows a network-capable device to access that network. The NIC has a ROM chip that contains a unique number, the media access control (MAC) Address burned into it. The MAC address identifies the device uniquely on the LAN. The NIC exists on the 'Data Link Layer' (Layer 2) of the OSI model.

How do I find out what network card I have on Vista?
Q. I'm looking to upgrade my network card, and I need to find a way to see what network card I currently have without opening the computer. The operating system is Vista.

A. go to Start Menu -> Run, (Or Windows Key + R) and open: %systemroot%\system32\dev mgmt.msc this will open the device manager. Look down the list of hardware types, and find "Network Adapters" If your network card is installed correctly, it should show up there.

Which connection is better to use with a wireless network card?
Q. I want to make my desktop wireless and need to know which is better to use, a USB network card or a PCI slot card?

A. With a PCI card you have to open the case, but have nothing dangling outside the case. With USB you have a dongle dangling, but do not have to open the case. Which is better or worse is up to you.

Can Anyone Recommend a Wireless Network Card Compatible with Vista 64 Bit?
Q. Hello I'm new to computers, and seem to have been bitten already by someone selling me a network card which doesn't work with Vista 64 bit (Edimax 7126g). Can anyone recommend a card that DOES work, and works well, in your OWN experience. It's a minefield out there if you don't know your stuff, which I don't. Thank you for any help.

A. YES There is, I have bought one. Check out D-LINK DWA 140 - It should be noted that alot of the drivers you have to download after purchasing as they do not come on the cd. Check out DLINKs website and go through there driver support section till you come across DWA140. found it- this one here: purchase then download the drivers :)
