What is the typical financial arraignment between major television networks and their affiliates?
Q. I know that networks pay production companies for the right to broadcast their shows, and I know that networks ultimately make their money via the sale of advertising. My question is, do networks sell advertising and then pay individual stations to broadcast their shows (with their ads), or do individual stations sell advertisements and then pay networks for their editorial content? Or do networks and affiliates have some other financial arrangement?

What is going on with the cable tv announcement that major networks may be taken off soon?
Q. I have received and seen news concerning tv problems: major networks might be dropped from our cable tv provider. This would eliminate a lot of football, wrestling, cartoons, and other programs that we cannot do without. They say the problem is over money - for the networks, while the networks say that the cable companies do not want to pay enough for rising programming costs. What can we do about this? This could be a real disaster.

A. I'm not too sure (as I don't know who provides cable services in your area) but I believe these messages are about the current Time Warner/Fox carriage negotiations. Here is the best way I can break it down for you. Basically all the broadcasters out there (Fox, ABC, NBC, etc) work out contracts with service providers for the rights to carry their channels. Right now Time Warner Cable and Fox are battling it out over said contract. The argument is exactly like you laid it out in your question. There is nothing we or you could really do about it. It's really all up to them to work it out. I personally don't think Time Warner would be stupid enough to not carry Fox. That would be a BIG BIG mistake. Also, I'm pretty certain that… [cont.]

Why does my friend have more wifi networks on the ipod touch?
Q. Well, my friend and I were hanging at a recreation center. When I opened wifi (ipod touch 2nd G) found only two networks, which were both locked. My friend opened his wifi (ipod touch 1st G) he had over 8 networks. Does anyone know why he had more network connections, when we were at the same place?

A. Every WiFi device will have different signal strengths, even just a little tiny bit off signal strength can give you many more networks, but that does not mean every network detected will give you a good connection.
