How much would it cost to upgrade my 2 ton A/C Unit with a 3 ton unit?
Q. I have an older home (50 years) and recently had an energy audit. The man informed me that my 2 ton unit is insufficient to cool my 1450 sq foot home. He said I should upgrade to a 3 ton unit. I live in kentucky and am wondering approximately what it would cost to upgrade my unit and also what can I do with my old 2 ton unit? Does it have resale value?

A. First off, do not buy a used unit!! You don't know where the unit has been nor what kind of condition you are buying it in. Plus manufacturer warranties are voided. Get a reputible company who has been in business for a while to give you a free estimate. Check out the local BBB. A reputible company will do what is called a Manual J, which is called a load calculation. Since the engergy auditer found you needed a 3 ton unit, you can show the company this. Deending on if you need a heatpump or straight AC (if you have a furnace), cost will change. However, you must determine what is important to you. Energy savings? Price? Allergen reducer? Warranty? Noise? Brand name? All of these factors go into chosing a unit. And the smallest unit… [cont.]

What are the settings for R22 on an older 2 ton unit?
Q. What are the settings for R22 on an older 2 ton unit? Right now it is 140 on the high and 60 on the low. Tag on air unit says 150 low 300 high (PSI). I don't know to add or remove freon.
Asked by lman9999@pacbell.net - Wed Jul 15 15:01:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The pressures you saw listed on the tag were actually the manufacturers test pressures at the factory to insure that there were no leaks in the piping. On an R22 unit the condensing temperature will generally be about 30 degrees higher than the ambient temperature. So on a day that is 70 degrees outside, the condensing temperature would be approximately 100 degrees. Your pressure at 100 degrees would be 195 PSIG. You can do a search for refrigerant pressure/temperature charts and see all of the correlating pressures to temperatures for a given refrigerant. Based on your low and high side readings, it would appear that you're a little low on refrigerant. One word of caution: Unless you possess an EPA certification to handle refrigerants,… [cont.]

How much should an 2 ton AC unit cost?
Q. I need to replace my AC unit at present I have a 2 1/2 ton wall mount inside unit with heat, and a 2 ton outside unit. I would like at least 14 seer, but if the price to go up to 16 seer (for tax credit) is <$1,500 I would do that. I am in Houston, TX. I can wait until winter to replace it if that may be cheaper.

A. DIY - $500-600. If you hire a contractor, you should get several bids. Residential A/C contractors are in need of work now with building still being slow. Some one honest should give you a good deal.

A. It can be a complicated formula that people go to school to learn properly. However, you can get pretty close so long as you know a good amount about the room (amount of insulation, window efficiency values, etc.) that your trying to size. There are many free "heat gain calculators" on-line that will help you figure out what you need. Once you get how much cooling you need make sure the registers allow enough air through them. Different registers have different amounts of free area. Also remember when running duct through a stud cavity that a 14 x 10 register will fit on your wall but the stud cavity is only 3 1/2 x 14. Even if you are handy and are going to do your ducting yourself it might be good to have a HVAC contractor out to do a… [cont.]

Q. I now have a 4 ton however it's not cooling fast enough or cold enough.
Asked by thelandlord22 - Wed Jun 25 20:22:58 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The difference is 1 ton. What is a ton of air conditioning in SI units? It is an energy unit that should be able to be converted into BTU/hr or kW or something similar. This unit originated with the cooling capacity of a ton of ammonia, the first refrigerant. A Ton of air conditioning equals 12,000 Btu/h (also one Btu/h is equal to 0.293 watts so...One ton = 3.516 Kilowatts) You probably need a ton and 1/2 or two ton airconditioner, since your smaller one isn't working. Now you know.

Q. I was wondering because I just got it replaced and wanted to know if I was given a fair deal. Does anyone know how much the outside condenser coil is?
Asked by micheller56 - Wed Sep 10 20:51:24 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. How old is it, why was it replaced, Most cases you should replace the unit it can cost less because there is less to do. Out door unit coil labor only around 535-735 plus cost of part. with new refrigerant law coming into effect very soon. R-22 will be like the refrigerant that used to be in your car. PS warrentee will not pay for the freon it is not under warrentee only what the manufacturer built. get the point. when it is $600.00 for a 30 lb jug you will wish it was a newer system. Most warrentee's cover 5 yrs parts 1 yr labor newer units Puron or 410 as it is also called are almost always 10 yrs parts and labor on higher eff units. SEER seasonal energy effigy rating based on the cooling mode Gas furnas are measured in afu like 70%… [cont.]

Air Conditioner / Air handler replacement - 2 Ton Unit?
Q. I was quoted a price today of 4300.00 to replace the outside compressor (leaked 5 pounds of refrigerant in 3 days) and the air handler unit under the house (I guess to match the compressor). Electrical and ductwork will all be reused. They are installing a Goodman 2 ton unit (13 Seer rating). Does this seem like a reasonable price for a turnkey installation?

A. I guess it depends on where you live. We charge less than that to replace the whole condenser and the airhandler. About $3900.00 for a 2 ton unit.

A. You give no indication of your location, and what additional work (if any) is also being done. But that is not a bad price for a high-efficiency unit with normal installation. You can always get another estimate or two - and that is generally also a good idea.

A. DominoKing, careful in getting prices online, as they do not always pan out to be the actual local going rate in your area---the cost of labor and material varies by location. Fortunately, there are plenty of local AC contractors seeking to give free estimates with no obligation, and taking advantage of this is the consumer-smart way to go about finding an accurate answer to your question. A local AC contractor can easily assist you in this project of yours. If you negotiate well with the contractor and he buys the materials (i.e., the AC, etc.) for you, you may try to have him pass the discounted cost of the materials to you, as usually contractors get discounts (called "contractor's discounts" / "contractor's price") when buying from… [cont.]

The same goes with the cost, unfortunately: The cost of material and labor greatly varies by location. Though, you know, you should definitely get more than one estimate, especially when it comes to big-ticket items like AC units. Free estimates are the key to your success in this home improvement project of yours. A. Don't waste your time or your hard earned $$$ having someone install used a/c equipment. You need to have a contractor come out. run a manual j load calcuation, and give an estimate on the installation of new equipment. New equipment comes with warranty, used equipment has no warranty Sell old unit for scrap!

A. Depending upon age you can just replace the compressor if one is still available.Yes you can use an a/c only condenser but you will have to rewire the t-stat and indoor unit to run the strip heat when there is a call for heat. This will increase your electric bill in the winter. The other factors are matching the evap with a new 13 seer condenser which usually requires a txv to be installed also depending upon brand and age of the system. Sometimes you can still find a 10 seer unit if you know the right people or contractor which will match you system again depending on age. If you do replace the compressor only make sure that the proper filter driers are installed, and that the system is cleaned up accordingly. Clean up of the system… [cont.]
